Sixteen Forks

These are our forks. Over the course of our marriage-- seventeen wonderful years-- we have acquired many different sets. To some it may seem a bit odd having so many mismatched silverware, but to me-- it suits me just fine. No embarrassment when company is over... no feeling to go out and replace my silverware with one new complete set.... I am quite happy with my forks. Now granted, I am not too happy when I get one of the forks with a bent prong-- but we deal with that too and just bend it back in shape.

As I was setting up the kitchen island for a dinner buffet one evening and carefully counted out sixteen forks, I noticed how much our forks resemble our family. Some are long, some are short, each have a unique and beautiful design different than the other, some have a stubborn, bent prong-- but all are needed because if we were a fork short one of our family members would not eat. Well not literally because of course we would get another one, but you get the picture. Without one of our children, we would be missing something too.

I even remember (for the most part) when and how we got each fork. Some came in our wedding set. Some came from my Grandmother when she passed away. Some came from a friend passing along their extras. Some came as a birthday present. And a few have just showed up at our house and we have decided to have them stay.

For some reason, they make me think about how our family is a mix of all different people brought together to make up a family.

I look at our forks and they make me smile.

What a beautiful post! It's so true that your family is like your silverware drawer - each fork is different in its own way, but each is beautiful and the set would be incomplete if even one were missing.

This is how our silverware looked when I was growing up. Some of it was from my parent's original wedding set and some of it was found in the bushes while we were camping. This was back in the days of camping in tents and pop-up trailers without water hook-ups. People washed their dishes in a basin outside and when they were done tossed the water in the bushes, along with an unknown fork or spoon. We used to go treasure hunting where we thought the bushes looked discolored from dishwater.

Wonderful analogy -- and just as the forks serve your family, you serve the Lord in so many beautiful ways.

Wait - don't everyone's forks look like that? I also don't like getting one with the bent tines...the first time my niece's husband came to our house for dinner, he got that one. It was pretty funny. Our spoons are quite varied too. Your family is beautiful Christine...so are your forks.
